Allan Hulme McCoid was born on January 21, 1926 in Iowa City, Iowa. He earned his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1949 and his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1952. McCoid joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1956 after three years at the University of California, Los Angeles. His specialization was in insurance, law and medicine and torts. The first lectures in the College of Law were given at the University of Minnesota on September 11, 1888 by Dean William S. Pattee to 27 students in the Hermean room in the basement of Old Main.
